Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact us before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support through the process. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

GMC Savana Cargo

The GMC Savana Cargo is one of the last true body-on-frame full-size vans left on the American market, and that is exactly why it keeps drawing interest from European buyers who need a workhorse rather than a car-derived panel van.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history and generations

The Savana name arrived in 1996 as GMC's badge-engineered twin of the Chevrolet Express, replacing the long-running Vandura. The current generation — internally GMT600/610 — has been in production since the 2003 model year and has been quietly updated ever since rather than fully replaced, which is unusual and works in an importer's favour: parts commonality across two decades is excellent.

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

Most US-market Savana Cargo vans you will find on the used market run the 6.0-litre Vortec V8 (roughly 341 hp and strong low-end torque), which is the sensible default for towing and heavy payloads.

Which trim makes sense

Cargo versions come as the 2500 (light duty, shorter 135-inch wheelbase) and 3500 (heavy duty, available on the extended 155-inch wheelbase).

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Supply in the States is deep and constant, because fleets, contractors and rental companies cycle these vans through in huge numbers.

Who benefits from importing

A Savana Cargo makes sense if you specifically want an American full-size van — for a camper or overland conversion, a specialised mobile business, or simply because you value the AWD V8 layout that no European manufacturer offers in this form.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The Savana's reputation is built on mechanical toughness rather than refinement. The 6.0 Vortec V8 and GM automatics are well understood and cheap to service by American standards.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

US Savanas run amber rear turn signals combined into the tail lamps, lack a rear fog lamp, and use imperial instrumentation.

TUEV, modifications and registration

Typical work for approval includes converting or adding a rear fog lamp, adapting rear lighting where required, headlight compliance, and a speedometer that reads correctly (odometer verification is part of the process).

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import a used GMC Savana Cargo to Germany?

Yes. It was never officially sold here, so it comes in as an individual import with §21 approval — a well-trodden path we handle regularly.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a GMC Savana Cargo?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Petrol or Duramax diesel — which should I import?

The 6.0 V8 is cheapest to buy and service; the 2.8 Duramax offers better range but is rarer and dearer. Choose by intended mileage.

Is the Savana AWD really available?

Yes, genuine all-wheel drive was offered on many configurations — a key reason buyers pick it over European vans.

How long does the whole import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mainly by ocean freight and the inspection slot.

Can it pass TUEV?

Yes, with the usual lighting and speedometer adaptations. Conversions must be documented.

Do you sell the van yourselves?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker; we source, verify and ship on your behalf without owning the vehicle.
